“In Jazz, improvisation isn’t a matter of just making any ol’ thing up. Jazz, like any language, has its own grammar and vocabulary. There’s no right or wrong, just some choices that are better than others.” Wynton Marsalis
“The Shadow of Your Smile” (Love Theme from the “Sandpiper”) featuring Dizzy Gillespie
Note: The Shadow of Your Smile was nominated for a Grammy award honoring dad’s arrangement for Dizzy Gillespie. This was part of my decade of Musical Thinking. Peace Out! JBC 8-)
Meet Me at the Edge of the Rainbow
It is a Love so Supreme for one another
A collaboration filled with surprise and spontaneity
It is our song.
It’s only natural we hold hands through thick and thin
Because it does not matter where we’ve been.
You know that a band is a team in disguise
Knowing that we can sing together and not talk
Spreading our wings we learn to fly
Conversations narrating life’s precious walk.
Moments flow to the cadence of our souls
Flowing and ebbing to and fro
Call and response in a playful plight
Each with perfect timing clearly it shows.
A composer forms a communal fest
Striking a chord between life and death
Making accommodations for all of their guests
Staccato dancing to whimsical riffs
Not knowing we are just pretending at an edge of rainbow’s cliff.
Can’t sit still for your feet form a line.
Improvisation espousing a mosaic design.
We are elevating, popular virtuosity and serenity
Discovering the truth jazz survives humanity.
Forming a village
From the depth of the sea
Emotions expressed in a fit of frenzy.
The power takes hold ~ A love so supreme
Manifesting in a collective vision
Two love one another through our rainbow’s respect
Emitting a universal sound of unity with no division
Spilling understanding twice what you would expect.
Meeting each other in a universe where we can only dream…..
